Auto Workers Strike In Midst of General Motors Contract Dispute
Monday, September 16, 2019

Over 49,000 members of the United Auto Workers union went on strike early Monday as contract talks with General Motors failed to reach a new agreement, which includes more than 3,900 at the Fort Wayne assembly plant. UAW members walked out of factories as well as set up picket lines at 33 plants across the country, as well as at 22 parts warehouses.

UAW Vice President, Terry Dittes, says that the strike is the union’s last resort because both sides are far apart in bargaining over a new four-year contract, which includes issues like health care and more competitive wages.

General Motors says it has made several offers, including higher wages as well as $7 billion worth of factory investments that would create hundreds of new jobs to various plants.

Bargaining on the issues were scheduled to resume at 10 A.M. Monday.
